Mar Gerges Solar Plant

Mar Gerges Solar Plant History and Current Situation

When Lebanon fell into an unprecedented economic crisis in 2020, Bishmizzine’s inhabitants, like many of us in Lebanon, were faced with very challenging living conditions, unable to continue sustaining themselves and their families. Further electricity cuts, water shortage, deteriorating infrastructure and limited cashflow made life almost unbearable. Bishmizzinees thus turned to their families and relatives in the diaspora for urgent aid, to overcome their daily struggles and infrastructure hardships.

By January 2022, however, Bishmizzinees began to search for alternative ways to overcome this crisis. They thus joined forces and decided to change the course of their village. The municipality, headed by Dr. Fawzi Kalash, Zahrat El-Adab, a local Bishmizzini NGO, and some Bishmizzine volunteers agreed to begin raising some funds, in order to reduce electricity shortages. By June 2022, they built a consortium, and agreed to use the money for installing eco-friendly solar panels, sustainably lighting up the entire village. Thus, the solar plant project was born!

The above consortium has deployed a 36Kwp production and 53Kwh usable storage Solar Plant at the hall of Mar Gerges and called it "Mar Gerges Solar Plant".

Many of local Bishmizzinees and Bishmizzine Diaspora has contributed in funding this project.

Today its power storage/bank provides electricity to 284 night street lights for 6 hours and provides electricity to the church, mosque and municipality building during day time.

Wait to hear from us about a similar project to lit all the street light using a green energy - Solar Plant.
